The St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco (SVDP-SF) proudly announces the appointment of Patrick (“Pat”) Schmalz as its new Chief Executive Officer. Previously CFO at Meals on Wheels San Francisco, Pat was a finalist for the Nonprofit CFO of the Year Award in 2022. His appointment marks a new era for SVDP-SF, renowned for its steadfast commitment to aiding the unhoused, survivors of domestic violence, and those in poverty. He brings a passion for service, residential knowledge of the local community, and a commitment to financial stewardship.
Pat envisions a bright future for SVDP-SF, enhancing our community through collaboration with the great city of San Francisco and other charitable organizations.

THE STORY OF A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVOR
MR. JOSE GARCIA, SVDP-SF GUEST
Our guest, a Navy veteran and survivor of domestic violence, came to SVDP-SF after being turned away by another service provider. Facing significant challenges, including financial instability and the effects of an abusive relationship, she struggled to achieve lasting security.
SVDP-SF staff worked diligently to eliminate barriers like homelessness, social isolation, and unresolved financial obligations. SVDP-SF provided her with safe housing and is now coordinating a seamless transition to a specialized agency that focuses on veteran services, ensuring she receives ongoing care and support.
Her story reflects the commitment to assisting those facing adversity, empowering them to move toward a more stable and hopeful future.
“My journey began when I arrived in Boston from El Salvador, full of hope for a new life. At first, I was well, until I received a devastating cancer diagnosis, with only three months to live if chemotherapy failed. A friend in San Francisco encouraged me to come for support.
When I arrived, I found out my friend struggled with schizophrenia. She left me without a place to stay for four days. After severe pancreatic pain, I found myself at SF General Hospital.
Eventually, I connected with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which provided me with services like job placement, transportation, food, and healthcare.
I’m grateful to the staff who genuinely want to help. With their support, I overcame cancer and moved into permanent housing. SVDP-SF truly made a difference in my life.”
