Senior Accounting Specialist


The Senior Accounting Specialist is responsible for the general ledger accounting and fund accounting for the organization. He/she is a key member of the finance team and works closely with the team to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial information in the General Ledger accounts with the goal of closing the periods on time. The Senior Accounting Specialist will analyze accounts, prepare journal entries, and assist with audit. The Specialist oversee the functions of contract and grant compliance, budget revisions, renewals and/or amendments of existing contracts, negotiation of new contracts and grants, billing on and collection of contracts and grants. The position coordinates, monitors and evaluates the fiscal and program operations personally and in collaboration with Program Directors and key program staff. This position is full-time, exempt. The Senior Accounting Specialist reports to the Controller.


• Manage the accounting operations including budgeting, auditing, accounts receivable, balance sheets reconciliations, general ledger and financial reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, internal policies and procedures, and funding agency regulations.
• Manage the financial records of all grants and contracts, including maintaining documentation on all matters related to grants; ensure all reporting requirements are met; advise staff on allowable and unallowable costs; ensure timely submission of invoices and request for reimbursement.
• Manage all financial and reporting aspects of funder relationships; collaborate with program directors/managers to review and finalize funder proposals and budgets, address payment inquiries and resolve invoice discrepancies.
• Oversee the post-award review of grants and contracts to ensure compliance with applicable funder guidelines; maintain grant funds, prepare budget revisions as necessary, manage records, controls and conditions governing expenditure of funds.
• Ensure compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards, guidelines, etc.
• Prepare monthly financial performance of all programs to Program Directors and advise resolution of variances, if any.
• Perform month end close, prepares and records assets, liability, expenses and revenue journal entries by compiling and analyzing account information. Maintains general ledger by transferring subsidiary accounts, preparing a trial balance and reconciling accounts.
• Analyze transactions to ensure correct balances, and researches account discrepancies and recommend corrective measures.
• Prepares schedules of necessary accounts for the annual audit; assists in the preparation of documentation for annual and external audits.
• Manage all subcontractor and sub-grant agreements and collaborate with program staff to ensure all goals are met and payment remitted in a timely manner.
• Assists in the implementation of new accounting procedures or systems
• Other duties or projects as assigned.


The successful candidate will possess personal initiative and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse, multi-cultural team. The individual must have strong general ledger accounting skills. The individual must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in accounting or business administration, or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting.
• Thorough knowledge of non-for-profit accounting, particularly as it relates to grant/contract management.
• Working knowledge of Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge software and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Attention to detail and deadline oriented.
• Thoroughness and accuracy in completing work.
• Ability to analyze and research transactions.
• Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships.
