JOB TITLE: Overnight Counselor
SCHEDULE: Thursday and Saturday Nights 9:30PM-6:00AM
LOCATION: Confidential shelter site
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt/part-time
SUPERVISOR: Residential Program Manager
SALARY: $15 per hour
BENEFITS: pro-rated vacation /sick hours, mandatory union membership
SUMMARY:
Under the direct guidance of the Residential Program Manager, this position will provide overnight coverage for shelter and the entire building.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensure the safety and security of the residents.
• Provide sole staffing coverage at night: crisis intervention, conflict resolution, peer support, and manage emergency procedures.
• As needed, provide direct client services: individual counseling, advocacy and emergency transportation (using program vehicle)
• As needed, maintain and compile client records, including individual case files, crisis-line forms, daily log and service statistics.
• Conduct nightly interior perimeter and census checks of the entire building.
• Responsible for turning on/off alarm system as needed.
• Participate in staff meetings as appropriate and requested.
• Represent Riley Center in community activities as needed.
• Upon hiring, complete next available domestic violence training offered by Riley Center or other certified trainer.
• Participate in appropriate on-going staff development training.
• Share shelter management duties: maintain donations, clean/set-up rooms, trash/recycling, laundry, basic maintenance, etc.
• Participate in on-going cross training to perform duties in other departments of the agency as needed.
• Assist with administrative tasks.
• Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• AA degree in social services or related field preferred or equivalent work experience.
• One year of Case Management experience.
• Experience and familiarity with a variety of creative arts and children’s play/educational activities.
• Knowledge of issues of child abuse/neglect, children who have experienced domestic violence and child development.
• Demonstrated skills in counseling, case management and client advocacy with children and families.
• Familiarity with Harm Reduction philosophy and approach.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
• Understanding of domestic violence issues, especially in context to race, class, gender, and sexual identity.
• Knowledge, experience, and comfort working with a diverse community, including LGBTQQ, youth, immigrant, low income communities, and communities of color.
• Working knowledge of community resources.
• Demonstrated commitment to open, direct, and non-violent communication.
• Ability to de-escalate crisis situations and make decisions under pressure.
• Basic reporting skills including data entry, Excel and Word processing.
• Strong initiative and ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a small office.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients, volunteers and staff.
